Tribute to Dr. Carol Fellows
For many of us, friendships are the reason we remain members of Rotary. Those friendships span time, miles, and countries, bound by a shared commitment to service, giving, and goodwill for all humanity.
Meeting Carol Fellows and her husband, Tim Bewley, in 2013 was truly serendipitous. The Rotary Zone 26-27 Institute was held in Phoenix, Arizona. Past Zone Director, Johrita Solari, said to Tim: “Come to the Institute, you will have fun and meet people that will be friends for the rest of your life.”
Tim was in charge of the entertainment. My husband, Alan Havir, engaged his band along with singer songwriter Harold Payne. Carol was in charge of the Peace Dinner and seeking a venue. We hosted the peace meal at our home in an intimate casual environment.
That weekend did indeed result in a lifelong friendship…they living in Ashland Oregon and we in Scottsdale Arizona. We traveled to Rotary International Conventions, theatre tours in England, Abbey Road, Shakespeare festivals in Ashland, wine tasting in Napa Valley, and so much more.
Carol recently passed away peacefully, but her legacy continues. In “Carol Fellows: A Gem with a Vibe and a Heart for Service,” Carol and Tim’s friend Deborah in Kampala offers a beautifully written glimpse into Carol’s life and their shared commitment to service. Please take a moment to read her tribute, which highlights that service through the following stories:
- Bringing hope and hands to Uganda
- The gin and tonic pledge that changed our club
- Seeing potential in every person
- Choosing service above position
- Building peace one person at a time
- The wedding that brought America to Buganda
- A friendship that became family
Deborah writes, “We shall forever miss Carol, but we shall also continue celebrating her through generosity, friendship, laughter, peacebuilding and service.”
Tim writes, “This all happened thanks to Rotary”.
I say, “This all happened because of heart”.
